Who We Are
The Friends of Highland Recreation Area (FOHRA) was established in 2007, and is a 501 (c) (3) tax exempt non-profit organization operating under lease agreement with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
In what has the potential to be the most fascinating and historically significant park in lower Michigan, our goal is to combine the former Haven Hill history with Highland Recreation Area’s existing recreation.

Making Our Mark In The Park
Welcome to the Friends of Highland Recreation Area (FOHRA) website! We are a growing group of Michigan residents, business owners and organizations, joining forces for a very simple concept: to bring to life a former recreational estate of Edsel Bryant Ford—for everyone to enjoy!
With a fascinating story waiting to be told, our plan will provide a very enriching experience for schools (and all ages!) throughout the state of Michigan—covering the estate’s natural and structural history, the Ford family, and even the backgrounds of such guests as Thomas Edison and Charles Lindbergh.
Under lease agreement with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, our efforts will combine the estate’s extraordinary qualities with the existing recreation of Highland Recreation Area. This includes miles of hiking, biking and horseback riding amid scenery that can only be likened to that of our northern peninsula. In the end, it will be a very rewarding experience!
First however, requires the rehabilitation of its three remaining structures. It is this chapter in the estate’s history that needs everyone’s help, and where you can add your name to the pages!
If you’re a Michigan resident, bear in mind that this is our park—any help you offer is for all of us! And you can do so without any heavy commitments. Stop in any workday you choose for example, or help us fulfill the materials list. Non-residents or those wishing to make donations can visit our Membership Information page, or you can simply refer friends and family to our website.
In any case, please know that we would rather this website be a fun and fascinating visit—not a recruiting tool. But with the clock ticking on this current chapter, making new Friends is our first priority! So while you’re here, please take the time to see how you can make your mark in the park!
And from all of us to you, thank you for your interest! |
